Kumamoto Airport is the 3rd busiest airport in the Kyushu region. This airport is at the foot of Mount Aso located at about 20km northeast from Kumamoto City. Aso Gokaku (five mountains) is the symbolic tourist destination of Kumamoto and about 35 minutes from Kumamoto Airport when you use a rental car. Kumamoto Castle which is one of Japan's three greatest castles, and the Suizenji Park where you can enjoy taking a walk peacefully, are located within Kumamoto City. It takes about an hour by car using the local roads from Kumamoto Airport.
There are a variety of tourist attractions in the Aso Gokaku area. You can go to the top of Mount Aso by ropeway which is convenient for tourists, enjoy horse riding at the Kusasenrigahama or enjoy amazing views from Daikanbo which is located at an altitude of 936m. The "National Park Healthful Forest ASO Farm Land" has leisure facilities, restaurants and accommodations. There are numerous onsens available for daytrips. Aso Gokaku area has a lot of charm.
There is plenty of fun along the east coast including Shimabara Bay, The East China Sea and the Pearl Line Cruising which pass under the Amakusa Gokyo. The Amakusa Gokyo (Five Bridges of Amakusa) was named after the pearl necklace. This area is actively farming pearls. The east coast roads are recommended driving along Kumamoto.
