Wakkanai Station is a railroad station which is located at the Japan's northernmost point. This station is used as transportation hub for tourists because there are long-distance buses and ferries that go to remote islands.
Northern Breakwater Dome which is the shape of a semi-arch, will catch your eye, when you drive to the north from Wakkanai Station by rental car. It has had played an important role of history. It was built to protect tourists and supplies from the waves, and it is still protecting the Port of Wakkanai, today. It is a must-see, there is nothing like this distinguishing landscape in the world. There is Cape Noshappu, after you drive approximately 10 minutes furthermore to the north along the shoreline. It also is popular among tourists as the scenic site of the beautiful sunset. You can overlook Rishiri Island and Rebun Island from this spectacular landscape site located at the northwest edge of Wakkanai.
You can observe the northern fish that are rare, and Clione etc. in the Noshappu Cold Current Museum. The view of the continuous superb landscape along the west shore is a great for driving and you can keep enjoying and won't be tired of the scenery of the majestic remote islands. You can take a break and relax at the [Dome] which is a day spa Wakkanai Onsen, and then you will be able to continue the drive comfortably.
