Otaru Station is located in the northern part of Shiribeshi Hokkaido, and is the hub station of Otaru city. It was pioneered after Hakodate. The buildings made of rock and the Otaru Canal around Otaru Station reminiscent of Meiji/Taisho eras give you the sense of old history where it used to be a mercantile city.
The gaslights will be lighted in the evening which brings an exotic atmosphere. The famous tourism site of Otaru Orgel Doh (Music Box Museum) is popular among tourists especially women. It is the biggest specialized store in Japan and there are surprisingly many music boxes being exhibited and sold in the store. It is also available to make your own original music box at the store which will be a perfect memorial souvenir of any Otaru Trip.
It is recommended to use a rental car when you go to Tenguzan where you can overlook the landscape of Otaru city. You can enjoy the landscape of Otaru Port, Shukutsu, and Shakotan Peninsula in the distance. This panoramic view will heal your mind. It also is exquisite to see the sunset or the evening. This tourism site is a great tourism site throughout the day. If you drive to the Sea of Japan, you will arrive Shukutsu where the herring fishery prospered in the Taisho era. You can enjoy overlooking the sea of Shukutsu from the observatory located on the hill of Shukutsu.
