Kushiro Airport is located on the hill approximately 20km northwest from Kushiro city in eastern Hokkaido. It is nicknamed as [Tancho Kushiro Airport] and taking an important role as a hub airport of eastern Hokkaido.
Akan National Park is about an hour from Kushiro Airport if you use a rental car. Lake Akan is famous for the habitat of spherical moss. There is a village of Ainu the indigenous people called [Ainu Kotan] by the lake and the folk craft goods are sold. There is Akanko Onsen nearby the lake and it is crowded by the many tourists every year despite the location in the deep mountains. There are also a lot of inns with the prided superb view from the outdoor onsen overlooking the lake.
Including Lake Kussharo which is one of the most transparent lakes in the world, Lake Mashu which is a distinctive deep blue and shows fantastic appearance, there are more lakes representing eastern Hokkaido. All of them are volcanic lakes such as Kawayu Onsen and there are big or small varieties of onsen around the area. [Kushiro shitsugen Norokko Train] is a sightseeing railroad operating in limited time. It is recommended because the train goes through the places where cars cannot enter, and you can see marsh and more nature up close.
